In Winter 1987, the Center for the Study of Southern Culture, working along with Baylor University and some colleagues throughout the South, published the first issue of Rejoice! The Gospel Music Magazine. The editor was Cheryl Thurber, a scholar of music and southern history. The inaugural issue included pieces on popular singer Amy Grant, the group The Soul Stirrers in the 1940s and 1950s, and the Carter Family, along with shorter features on singing school leader A.J.
